      You could do an Advanced search (over 3 or 6 months) for "acquire lockfile" to see threads covering that topic, using the link at the upper left corner of this page.

      Sometimes it can be caused by using the BOINC CPU throttle mechanism, sometimes it's AV software locking the files, but I'm not sure if always a reason could be found.

        I just had to do a project reset myself, though I probably could have avoided it in retrospect. I'm running 6.6.28; I had restarted the BOINC service manually (to tweak another project), but have generally left the current WU processes resident in memory when idle (default setting). It looks like the reset server doesn't see the processes in the process table but instead tries to start another copy of the executable, which causes the problem with the lock file.

        So, if you're getting that error, try rebooting first before resetting the project and losing your progress to that point.

          This may also be the issue I have seen where other projects are causing problems. The list of project that *I* have seen that can cause this are:

          - Hydrogen
          - IBERCIVIS
          - Drug Discovery

          There is at least one more project that can cause this (though for the life of me I cannot recall which one it is). The culprit is that the project has a large file or directory structure that needs to be configured at task start or end, the disk activity lasting more than 20-30 seconds causes the heartbeat signals to be missed between the other tasks and the BOINC client as it is busy. These science apps then shoot themselves because they think BOINC is dead.

          Moment later, the system restarts the tasks.

          This heartbeat issues has been a critical fault in the bug list and is number 6 if I recall correctly and it is still unaddressed years later. I documented this issue rather throughly about 2 months ago (again) to point out that it is still a significant issue... and a hard one to figure out if you are not aware of it ...

              No. It's just some kind of hicup between the Boinc core client and the science app, it will NEVER cause a reboot. Other than hardware problems, only combinations of bugs in the operating system and or drivers and ordinary applications can course a reboot.

              If your PC suffers from sporadic reboots, you'll have to look for other explations. If those happen only with BOINC running, consider if the thermal stress could be a problem (check the cooling and clean out any dust that might have accumulated in heat sinks etc).
