"Your computer has no nvidia GPU"

I saw the thread from a few days ago about this but resetting the project (multiple times) has had no effect. The Einstein status page - for what its worth - shows everything a-ok with the servers. Any ideas anyone?

This is my first foray into distributed computing besides folding, but thats a dead loss on ATI gpus with more than 320 sps, as I have 580 left idle. An article I saw many moons ago said my 4870 should be 'zomg amazing' at einstein@home.

As a side note my cpu is chomping on new tasks with gay abandon, so I think my BOINC client is on the money at this end.

Many thanks, Andy.

Yes, you have an ATI GPU, which is not one by Nvidia. The ABP1 work that's available here is only done (partially) on CUDA which requires an Nvidia GPU, not an ATI GPU.

Resetting the project won't make your ATI card turn into an Nvidia card, so you can stop doing that. CUDA won't run on ATI GPUs, just as much as you can't install Nvidia drivers on an ATI videocard.

If you want to do the work here on a GPU, you'll require an Nvidia GPU.

Thanks for the reply Ageless. Well thats rather dissappointing. Im gonna have to uninstall this boinc thing then. Lol my einstein@home career lasted 1 afternoon.

Why? It runs on the CPU as well, plus there are other projects on which you can use the ATI GPU, if you so strictly must. My CUDA/CAL FAQ (CUDA is for Nvidia cards, CAL is for ATI cards) shows a list of projects that use GPUs and which ones use what.

Well, there is a silver lining to all this if you are interested.

You can still crunch E@H on all 4 CPU cores and at the same time you could put your ATI 4850 to very good use over at Milkyway where they are analysing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with the aim of understanding the structure of / contributing towards the 3D mapping of the milkyway galaxy. If you are interested in Astronomy/the Cosmos, these two projects should fit together quite nicely for you.

The ATI aware BOINC versions (6.10.x) are a quite recent development that is still being worked on. There are very few ATI capable projects. MW still needs to do server upgrades to support the ATI GPU apps natively. However it is quite easy to run them under the anonymous platform mechanism where you nominate and supply the app you wish to use and the server just accepts it. These apps are incredibly fast eg. 3.5 mins on a HD4850 compared to several hours on a CPU core. The GPU tasks use virtually no CPU time so all your CPUs are still available for normal CPU tasks at your project of choice.

If you would like to use your GPU at an ATI capable project, let me know and I'll PM you some instructions. As you are using WinXP, you will need to make sure you are using the older 8.12 version of the catalyst drivers to have a trouble free time with the MW ATI app.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary, I have a q6600 and an ati 4850; I'd like to run my quadcore for einstein@home and my ati gpu for the milkyway project. Could you please PM me some instructions too in order to do this?

Thanks

Hi ehasko, welcome to the Einstein@home project.

Your q6600 is not currently registered at E@H so you need to let me know what OS it has. As mentioned previously, an older version of the catalyst driver is needed for WinXp. Perhaps you are already using Win7 for that machine too?

The easiest thing to do is install the recommended version of BOINC on your q6600 and attach it to E@H. Your BOINC client should request both CPU and GPU work but the server will only send CPU work and you can ignore comments on the messages tab of BOINC manager about not having a suitable GPU. Once your machine is running properly here, it's pretty easy to download the correct app for your GPU to start crunching MW tasks. I'll send you the instructions once your machine is up and running.

Cheers,
Gary.
