I am using laptop computer to run BOINC manager. Laptop computer is easy to get hot.

The "computing preferences" setting can control heat generation by lowering the usage percentage of CUP and the usage time of CPU.

However, when GPU is also required in some computing tasks, there is no way to control the usage percentage and the usage time of GPU. GPU is running all the time. There is no way to control the heat generated by GPU.

If I don't snooze GPU manually, the CUP and GPU temperature will rise up to 80℃(167℉).I am afraid if I leave my computer in high temperature like this all year round, it shall break down easily. Are there some ways to limit the usage percentage of GPU or automatically suspend GPU for a while ?

No way to suspend GPU automatically

I'm crunching on a laptop as well. As a laptop user heat problems are likely to occur and I think everybody has to find his/her way to cope with them. My solution is:

1. I am not doing any CPU work. The GPU is much more productive and if I do CPU and GPU work my laptop will get too hot. So I use my NVIDIA 610M and HD4000 only.

2. I crunch only one task per GPU (utilization factor=1). Although this means the GPU is not as productive as it could be when running multiple tasks in parallel, it also means that it doesn't get too hot.

3. I make sure that my laptop gets enough fresh air by regularly checking for dust.

There is software that can do that for you, I can't remember the name of it right now though! If you are a Seti cruncher you can ask over there, I think several people over there use it. Your gpu software may also have some settings in it, most do, that you can use to under clock it just a bit so it doesn't over heat. Also do you have a usb fan pad underneath your laptop? If not get one!! They can be cheap or expensive, I buy the cheap ones, 3 or 4 at a time, and replace them as the fans stop doing their jobs. I usually go thru 2 per year, sometimes 3 if it gets too warm.
