After BOINC manager started and icon in SysTray, can not double-click on icon or right-click on icon to display options. Must go to Task-manager to terminate program or Logoff or Shutdown Windows.

Gray,

You can click on the username (in blue) and then on "computers" to see; can even go further to look at WUs.

Looks like you've taken up the help vocation. :-)

Hello Michael

Well you were kind enough to help me so I thought I would try to help back where I can - on another post Donna has the same firewall as myself, so I reckon I could help her there, but I think she has given up.. pity

Gray,

Keep it up, then. Or as they say, "Pay it Forward".

Kurt, how long do you wait

Kurt, how long do you wait before killing it thru the task manager? Try waiting a few minutes to see if it recovers.

A couple things can happen when BOINC starts where it locks up. Most common is it looks up the IP address of the hostname, and if a DNS server isn't available it'll "lock up" until the DNS request times out. Although its BOINC thats locks up, the Boinc Manager BOINC communications is synchronous in nature, so if BOINC locka up so does Boinc Manager.

The same thing can happen during normal operation when BOINC tries to contact the project server. If DNS isn't working BOINC and Boinc Manager will appear to "lcck up".

I've waited over 5 minutes.

I've waited over 5 minutes. I have also noticed that BOINC continues to run the various programs in the background and I do not see anything out of the ordinary in STDOUTAE.TXT. It shows the processes starting/stopping normally. Your comment makes me think that the Internet link being down (due to the firewall kicking in when the screensaver starts) is locking BOINC and it never returns. Although you say it should timeout (after how long??), but is not appearing to return.
I'll reboot after the firewall changes and see if it makes a difference and let you know.

Hi Kurt, If stdoutdae.txt

Hi Kurt,

If stdoutdae.txt shows BOINC is doing something, but Boinc Manager is "locked up" during that same time, you probably have a problem with the Boinc Manager BOINC connection. Thats network based so the firewall could have something to to with it.

Something to try - you can change the shortcut in the startup group so Boinc Manager doesn't start in the systray. Right click "Boinc Manager" in the startup group and click "Properties". In the "Target" box remove the "/s" option at the end. The selection for "Run:" should be "Normal window".

You can also start Boinc Manager a second time, it'll just connect to BOINC and can use either one to "manage" BOINC. So after making the change to the startup options, start it and see if it connects to BOINC OK.

And check stdoutgui.txt and stderrgui.txt. Thats where Boinc Manager writes output and error message.

Hello Kurt

I'm using Zonealarm and it is now working now that I've enabled the Passlock on the BOINC client. I had it enabled on BOINCGUI and BOINC manager, but missed the client. Thanks everyone for sending me in the right direction. It feels good to have it running properly again.
