I have been doing these kinds of project since 1998. I have donated CPU cycles to Distributed.net, SETI@home, Folding@home, Climate predictions, Lifemapper, and several others. Except for distributed.net I tend to move on after six months or so when I find a new interesting project.
This is the second boinc project I have tried, SETI@home was on their old client when I was running it.
I like that boinc runs on Linux which I switched over to for most of my home use in 1999.
